The Government approved the draft law ‘On Management of Waste from the Mining Industry’
On 1 November 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the draft law ‘On Mining Waste Management’. The draft law
- brings national terminology in line with the European one, and establishes new approaches to the classification of facilities for extractive industry waste
- defines the responsibilities of all market participants;
- regulated the activities of enterprises in the management of such waste and during the operation of relevant facilities, closure and implementation of post-operational measures;
- regulates the issue of man-made deposits and the management of abandoned facilities;
- formulated requirements for obtaining permits in the field of extractive industry waste management, as well as for state supervision (control);
- requirements for financial support of the operator of extractive industry waste management facilities are defined;
- Provides for liability for violation of the law;
- introduces a system for managing and controlling risks and potential hazards, which will prevent significant accidents and deterioration of water resources, air and soil pollution.
This document will allow Ukraine to implement the provisions of the European Directive 2006/21/EC on the management of waste from the extractive industry and solve existing problems with its waste.
