Duration of Russia’s War Against Ukraine Has Reached the Scale of World War I

June 11, 2026 marked the 1,569th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, exceeding by one day the duration of World War I, which lasted four years, three months, and fourteen days — a total of 1,568 days. The war began on July 28, 1914, and ended on November 11, 1918.

The total number of military and civilian casualties of World War I is estimated at between 15 and 22 million deaths, with approximately 21 million wounded military personnel, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.

The Kremlin once anticipated a rapid offensive and swift capture of key Ukrainian cities. However, reality proved very different, and the war has turned into a prolonged and exhausting conflict.

Despite its numerical superiority and material resources, the Russian army has failed to achieve its declared strategic objectives and continues to suffer daily losses in personnel and equipment, which accumulate into enormous figures over time.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold the front line and successfully strike enemy logistics, gradually complicating the aggressor’s ability to wage war.

History certainly knows many wars that lasted much longer—decades or even centuries—but one can only hope that the war against the Russian neo-imperial aggressor will not approach any further “records” in duration.

Glory to Ukraine, its people, and its Armed Forces!

Victory will be ours!
