The war began on July 28, 1914, and ended on November 11, 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number of military and civilian casualties of World War I is estimated at between 15 and 22 million deaths, with approximately 21 million wounded military personnel, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kremlin once anticipated a rapid offensive and swift capture of key Ukrainian cities.
